Project Sigchos

ELDERLY HOME
In the month of April 2003, in the locale of Sigchos (Latacunga), construction of a small elderly house was completed. The project was completed by students from the Catholic University in Quito who actively participated in the construction.

CHEESE FACTORY OF SIGCHOS
One of the ways for finding a source of funding was in the construction of a cheese factory that functioned since 2000, thanks to the colaborations of the parrish priest, Father Hugo and the Catholic University. In December of 2002, a youth from Sigchos, Juan Pablo, traveled to Valtellina (So) to learn new techniques to prepare cheese. Looking forward to amplifying and restructuring the building, Ayuda Directa decided to support the initiative via a loan to advance the project.

SAN MIGUELITO
San Miguelito is one of the farthest communities from Sigchos. In order to arrive, one must go through poorly maintained roads that are the only means of contact and, for the majority of the year, are impossible to navigate due to harsh rainstorms. It is also difficult for horses, the mode of transport along these roads, to walk down the muddy roads. There are only twelve families that live in this area and the houses are very far away from each other, typically an hour walk between each one. The small wooden school and church comprise the community center. The lack of electricity is another factor that makes the conditions of life quite difficult for the people living in San Miguelito.
From 2003 to 2004 we worked in San Miguelito in collaboration with the Catholic University of Quito with particular attention to the areas of agriculture and animal husbandry.
